Candice Onyeama Biography

Candice was educated at the Quaker school, The Mount in York. She moved to London to study a french degree at the University College London (UCL) where she also studied a module in French Film that inspired her interest in filmmaking. She won a Dada Award scholarship for a post-graduate diploma at the Drama Studio London.

After working as an actress for a few years, she realized her passion was behind the camera and after winning a competition on Ideastap, she attended directing workshops at the Northern film school and went on to make her first award-winning short film HUSH.

Career

After starting out in acting and featuring in shows including BBC’s doctors, Candice moved to filmmaking. Her work has screened on television and at international festivals around the world. Her BFI Network film, BORN AGAIN was a winner of Shooting People’s New Shoots awards with director, Sarah Gavron, praising it as ‘a beautifully directed film. The well-reviewed film screened on BFI player as part of BIFA qualifying Soul Fest 2020 and was an official selection at BAFTA qualifying Aesthetica and Norwich film festival. Her debut short film HUSH, was featured in Afro Punk in 2017 and was the best screenplay winner at academy award qualifying Reel Sisters film Festival as well as the best short film winner at the British Urban film festival It was also broadcasted on the television network London Live.

Her short film ONCE AN OLD LADY SAT ON MY CHEST was featured as one of 6 top crowdfunding films to support on Metro and screened at festivals including bafta qualifying Underwire as well as on film platform Cinewax Candice’s filmography includes the short film MY VOICE, a commission by Into Film, as well as writing two short films for Orchid Cancer Charity.
