Don Gunasena Athukorala’s Early life
Don Gunasena Athukorala was born in Aruggoda Panaduara. He had his primary education from St. Jones college Panadura and from Sri Sumangala College Panadura. Then he joined Ceylon Technical College (CTC) to study engineering. After having the theoretical training at the CTC he obtained his Engineering degree from the University of London. He obtained his formal training at Willment Brothers in Middlesex and Scott Wilson Kirkpatrick & Partners in London.

In 1962 he joined the State Engineering Corporation of Sri Lanka as its starting member. He was the Deputy General manager of SEC while A. N. S. Kulasinghe was the Chairman and the General Manager. During this period large government projects such as the Ceylon Steel Corporation building, Thulhiriaya textile mill, etc were built under his direct supervision. From 1977 to 1979 he became the chairman of the SEC and in this period SEC was involved with large housing schemes and large projects in the Accelerated Mahaweli Program under his leadership.
1980 he joined Mahaweli Authority as a Director of Mahaweli Headwork division. He formed the Headwork Division and was the first Director. The main function of the division was to understudy the completed projects under the Mahaweli Development Program, and take over for Administration, Operation, and Maintenance work. The Mahaweli Dams maintenance processes were developed under his leadership and this was included developing many operating manuals. He was able to write the ‘Dam Instrumentation’ paper and it was presented at the Institute of Engineers of Sri Lanka general meeting.

Don Gunasena was born to Don Hendrik Athukorala, Director, P.D. Pedoris Appuhamy and Company, and Dona Catherina Athukorala on 25 May 1924. Don Gunasena married Irangani Seneviratne, daughter of Dr. Don Robert and Laura Seneviratne in August 1957. They have three children Aravinda Athukorala, Ruvini Athukorala Subramaniam, and Prasanna Athukorala, and six grandchildren, Arun, Pierrick, Radhini, Etienne, Tarini, and Otara. In January 1999, he migrated to Sydney, Australia with his wife, Irangani.
